Hashish has been around for centuries, but extractions are somewhat new to the cannabis industry. In the last few years, the world of blunts and bong rips has turned into a dab scene filled with hydrocarbon shatter and supercritical CO2 oil. The methods, equipment, and knowledge that it takes to craft shatter with these chemicals take years of education and thousands of dollars. Unlike other flower, edibles, and hashish, the art of extraction was a mystery to cannabis connoisseurs.

Now we know more about extraction with hydrocarbons like butane and ethanol as well as supercritical gas like CO2. Along with these advancements, we’ve figured out how to make dab worthy extractions safely at home using no butane or CO2 whatsoever. This method, referred to as 'rosin', uses heat and pressure to literally squish the chemical compounds (terpenes and cannabinoids) out of fresh full flower, kief, or hashish. The type of product that we use changes our yield, concentrates like hash and kief yield higher, and flower will produce a bit less.  

The first rosin set-ups use hair straighteners and parchment paper. And although there are now fancy rosin extraction machines, they pretty much use the same principles on a larger scale with more precise settings. To make rosin at home we can use a hair straightener, a t-shirt press, and pretty much any heated panels that are positioned to apply pressure to one another. We will also need parchment paper, a 25u micron screen and a dab tool to collect the product. Oh, and of course, don’t forget the high quality processing materials.

How To Make Homemade Dabs

No matter what type of processing materials have been chosen, you will need to cut them into about 0.2 - 0.5 gram pieces for the hair straightener. The larger the metal plates, the larger the size of the processing materials. After materials are prepared, cut non-stick parchment paper to the correct size for our heating plates and processing material size. Once these materials are prepped it’s time to focus on the heat level. If we have the option to set the heat we should set it according to what we’re looking for from the end product.

Rosin Heating Guide

250°F- 300°F - These lower temperatures will deliver a lower yield but retain more of the terpene profile and thus, a well-rounded flavor.

300°F- 335°F - High temperatures mean high yield but also low terpenes and therefore less flavor.

Now, just wrap the flower in a 25u micron screen and fold the parchment paper around the screen. Place this whole parchment paper situation into the center of the heating plate and apply pressure for 3-5 seconds. Remove the parchment, open and reveal the squashed start material surrounded by the end product: rosin. Carefully remove the start materials without taking any rosin with it. Then collect the rosin using the dab tool and place into a container for later. This is the best way to produce rosin at home, but there are commercial rosin extractors available from companies like Sasquash and PurePressure. These equipment manufacturers have fine tuned rosin manufacturing far more than what we’ve laid out. But as far as homemade dabs go, the method above is your best bet to start with.
