It takes effort to be an active stoner, but it’s worth it.

A lot of people like to assume that stoners are lazy. But those people aren’t in the know. Sure, cannabis can be used to incite lazy afternoons on the couch engorging ourselves with pizza and silly movies. But like everything in life, smoking cannabis requires a conscious balance.

I was a college soccer player until a hip injury took me out during my sophomore year. Cannabis kept me sane as I transitioned from a hyperactive fit lifestyle to a lethargic somewhat depressed daily existence. Soon, I began to understand how to utilize cannabis to my benefit. This is when I became what I like to call an active stoner. There are proper activities for Indica, Sativa, and CBD strains. Knowing the right way to pair our workout with our cannabis can help us maintain the optimal stoner lifestyle balance.


When it comes to smoking Indica, I tend to prefer it all the time. But in this list we’re hoping to finely tune from an objective perspective. Indica strains can make some of us a bit lethargic, but they’re also fantastic in providing relief from pain, inflammation, stress, and anxiety. This is why I find Indicas ideal in my yoga practice. Yoga is all about a conscious movement within an unconscious realm. Sativas might make us too conscious of the present moment to access the deep shiva energy of a ‘lifted’ yoga session. Also, not everyone is comfortable on their yoga mats. Indica can also help us release those inhibitions and access deeper levels of our practice. For those that are too sensitive to Indica strains and fall asleep, try out an approximately 60% Indica hybrid.


Personally, Sativa strains give me immense anxiety unless I’m outdoors. If I’m on a hike or going for a run, Sativas are just perfect. While hiking, activating our imaginations with Sativa edibles or flowers can help us tune in to nature. The chirping of birds will ring so clear, the green of the trees will appear so bright, smoking a sativa can enhance the experience of being outside. While running, Sativa strains can aide in keeping us active mentally. This activity will keep us from getting bored and help us continue longer. It is important to note that running is hard on the joints and bones. For this reason, think about supplementing with CBD tincture or candies. This can help keep our muscles and bodies feeling good while the Sativa does its work. If Sativa strains give us horrific anxiety, a 50/50 hybrid will have the same effect.

High-CBD, Low-THC

There are some more dangerous sports that we wouldn’t recommend smoking before. Among these are snowboarding, mountain biking, rock climbing and other extreme (but super fun) activities. Until we’re experienced in these sports we should probably refrain from being mentally altered while we’re practicing. If we get too high, extreme sports can become even more dangerous. But the inflammation relief and gooey body high are super great for rock climbing and snowboarding. This makes high-CBD strains like Harlequin best. Maintain mental faculties but feel relief from daily aches and pains. CBD also commonly comes in tincture and edible form.
