Over the last decade, the general public has begun to open their eyes to the dangers of sugar. A high sugar diet can lead to type 2 diabetes, weight gain, early menstruation, and poor semen quality (ie. lower chance of getting pregnant). And even with these logical warnings, the public issue and possible addition to sugar runs deep. Americans consumed 11 million tons of sugar in 2017 even with relevant research proving this is not the healthy way to live. Though sugar can be found in everything from bottled ketchup to sliced bread, a majority of this consumption is in the form of sodas, sports drinks, and sweetened beverages.
And though those symptoms may seem dangerous enough, it appears there’s even more to the story. Recently, a study published out of the University of Boston showed a correlation between those who drank 1-2 sodas per day and a lower cognitive function. The statistics supported the notion that this level of soda consumption caused smaller brain volume, poorer memory, and a smaller hippocampus. That means that sugar consumption is harmful to our brains, something that can’t be said about the regular consumption of cannabis.
Whether we’re smoking it or eating it, cannabis research suggests that CBD could actually increase neuroplasticity. The sugar antithesis. As these cannabis studies continue to show the benefits of the plant, and studies of other substances show how harmful legally marketed products can be, it is surely only a matter of time until regulators worldwide understand that cannabis should be freed from illegality.
