Dabbing Evolution: From Hot Knives To E-nails

recreational

Dabbing, you’ve most likely heard about this by now. If not, you must live in a place that still supports draconian marijuana prohibition. That or you are entirely new to the cannabis scene. For those of you who are not familiar with the term dabbing, it refers to smoking cannabis extracts/concentrates which go by different names depending on how they were produced.

Dabs basically started out as hash and has evolved into a variety of different types today. Shatter, wax, budder, sugar wax, crumble, live resin, and CO2 honey oil are the most common. You might remember it being called hot knifing. Today the world of dabbing has grown to have its own vocabulary, tools, and even its own holiday.

710 has become the synonymous number for dabbing like 420 is for smoking bud. If you remember back in school typing 710 into a calculator and holding it upside down to see it spelled OIL. Since dabs are referred to as BHO (butane honey oil) 710 was only fitting. Now July 10th has become an additional holiday for those who love cannabis, in particular, cannabis extracts.

Dabbing Continues to Evolve

Today hot knifing is a thing of the past. There’s a multitude of different styles and designs of dab rigs and devices today. We have electronic nails (e-nail) for your dab rig which require only electricity to heat up. There are electronic dab pens similar to e-cig vape pens – – if you use an electronic device to dab, you’re e-dabbing. You can a variety of glass dab straws, quartz bangers, and titanium nails. Don’t forget your silicone containers, silicone dab mat, and dab tool.

You’ll need a torch if you’re going to dab on a straw, nectar collector, or be using a rig unless you opt for an e-nail. If you’re entirely new to dabbing and would like to give it a try, remember to go slow. Dab’s are much more concentrated than bud. Start with a dib (small dab) vs. a dab. Hit the rig, straw, or nectar collector slow and easy. Hitting a dab rig is much different than hitting a bowl or bong.

Visit a pipe shop and ask for someone to set you up with everything you need to dab for the first time. Set-ups can get pricey depending on what you choose, but you can get started for as low as $20 (straw or cheap nectar collector). Remember with dabs a little goes a long way – you might say that just a dab will do.
