Cannabis & Canines

There is always an array of good and bad stories thrown out whenever we bring up the topic of pets and cannabis. There’s this one specific horror story we’ll never forget about a friend’s puggle who got into 75 mg of cannabis by way of a chocolate truffle. He was OK, but he acted like he was drunk for almost 48-hours. Though this was traumatic for all parties involved, the real tragic story is that more people don’t know how valuable the right dose of cannabis can be for their dogs. While all animals could probably find some benefit from cannabis oil, our experience is with dosing dogs. Since animals can’t tell us how they’re feeling, don’t dose a cat or reptile the same as a dog until doing the proper research.

As for dogs, cannabis is so beneficial to our canine friends that there are now pet-centric CBD and hemp products on the market. There are a couple of ways that our four legged friends can enjoy CBD, and sometimes, in very small doses, THC. Hemp oil is generally high in CBD and lower in THC, as such it is the most suitable product for the family pet. They’re also easier to administer since the oil can be dropped right over the pup’s food. But what will hemp oil do for our pet? Let’s check it out.

Lots of pets deal with anxiety, but they tend to show it in different ways. Some bark at people when they come around the house. These dogs also tend to bark when someone approaches while they’re leashed. Other dogs might chew on a hotspot or communicate with groans or whimpers when feeling anxious. Whatever the signs of anxiety are, lots of dogs deal with it and their owners are left helpless wondering what to do. The high concentrations of CBD in hemp oils can help to balance a dog’s mood and promote them living anxiety free. It can improve their general disposition, help them be less hostile towards other people, and possibly make them more friendly with other dogs.

Old Age

As our furry little buddies get older they will pick up ailments just like people do. Older dogs can get arthritis, cataracts, and other chronic conditions. Hemp oil can help to alleviate these aches and pains, reduce inflammation, and shine a little light onto the last years of our best fur friend’s life. We had one very poignant experience with an elderly dog. She was in pain and  almost blind, she also suffered from dementia. Her life was one of confusion and pain, but then we got her some hemp oil. She would get her CBD with her food in the AM and then play with her younger dog friends all the morning. By the afternoon, she would nap restfully around the house. Hemp oil can make an old dog feel young and spry again, and give an owner a little peek at their dog’s golden days.

Our pets can benefit from cannabis just as much as we can. Young or old, hemp oil can help a dog’s life maintain balance and serenity. There are some great hemp oils specifically for animals, but if those are hard to find most pure hemp oils should suffice.
