Dry mouth, along with dry eyes, is one of the most commonly listed side effects from people who have been inhaling or ingesting cannabis. It can be annoying and lead to some gross or even uncomfortable side effects. Luckily, staving off cottonmouth is as simple as staying hydrated. This is easy if we keep a reusable water bottle around at all times, filling it whenever we can. But we aren’t always prepared, and sometimes we find ourselves smacking our lips together with horrible cottonmouth after lighting up a joint.

The more scientific names for cottonmouth are dry mouth syndrome or Xerostomia. Our salivary glands produce spit so that our mouths and throats stay lubricated, but with dry mouth syndrome, our salivary flow reduces. If we don’t drink water to get rid of cottonmouth, the dryness will just continue to spread. That’s where the side effects come in. Eventually, our throat will dry out, which can lead to a sore throat and sometimes even bad breath.

That means that if you’re chiefing up, make sure the water and breath mints are nearby. Cottonmouth doesn’t have to be serious; it just takes some hydration.
