Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects people all around the world. With a long, inconvenient, and painful list of symptoms, this condition can hamper the quality of life of those affected by it. Now, with the increase in scientific and anecdotal research, we’ve found that cannabis may be an effective treatment for IBS.

The symptoms of IBS are:

  • Stomach or abdominal cramping
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Gas
  • Mucus in the stool
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Sudden need to have a bowel movement
  • Weight loss
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Vomiting
As you can see, these symptoms interfere with day to day life and cause a lot of discomfort but unfortunately, the exact cause of IBS is unknown. Possible causes include gastrointestinal infection, muscle contractions in the intestinal system, nervous system dysfunction, or inflammation.

Cannabis can treat the symptoms of IBS by relieving pain, inflammation, and balancing your endocannabinoid system, which studies have shown may play a role in the cause of IBS. Your endocannabinoid system helps to regulate pain, inflammation, and digestive function.  In a study from 2008, it was found that “cannabinoids have similarly demonstrated the ability to block spinal, peripheral, and gastrointestinal mechanisms that promote pain in headache, fibromyalgia, IBS and related disorders.”

A survey from 2015 also found that medical cannabis patients benefited from their use for a number of conditions including IBS. The survey was conducted on 2,495 patients. This is promising anecdotal evidence.

So cannabis could definitely be a potential therapy for IBS, especially through pain relief and endocannabinoid system regulation. It can also raise the quality of life for those who suffer from the disease by increasing mood, allowing for more activity, and increasing appetite. So if you suffer from tummy troubles, think of lighting up a joint. You may just find the relief you need.
