Edibles are so à la mode these days; you'd think they originated in France. The problem is, (a) they aren't legal everywhere, and (b) they're pricey. But, if you have a source for bud, then you can make cannabutter and create cannabis cuisine at home for much less.

We'll start with a quick-and-easy way to make cannabutter at home and show you a few excellent foolproof ways to use it.

 

1. Spread 1/2 oz of bud onto a baking sheet.

2. Bake at 240 degrees for 40 minutes to decarboxylate.

3. Add two sticks of butter to 2 1/2 cups of water in a saucepan. (Cast iron on induction top if you've got it!)

4. When the butter is melted, break up the decarbed bud and add it to the butter and water. Mix with a rubber or silicone spatula.

5. Let the mixture simmer on low heat for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. Never let it come to a full boil.

6. Pour the liquid and plant material through a metal sieve, lined with cheesecloth over a container that will catch the medicated butter.

7. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours or until the butter has hardened all the way through. The butter will separate from the water, forming a solid puck above the water.

 

I) Rice Krispie Squares

Your favourite recess snack, adultified with a little cannabutter. This marijuana crispy treat recipe from our buddies at The Weed Blog uses 1/2 cup of marijuana butter. But it could make about 30 doses depending on how fat you cut each square.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of marijuana butter
  • 4 cups miniature marshmallows
  • 5 cups of Rice Crispy treats cereal or any crisp rice cereal

Directions:

  • Melt margarine in large sauce pan over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until melted and well-blended. Cook 2 minutes longer, stirring constantly. Remove from heat.
  • Add cereal. Stir until well coated.
  • Using buttered spatula or waxed paper, press mixture evenly and firmly in buttered 13 x 9 inch pan. Cut into 2 x 2 inch squares when cool.

Sit back and snack. Remember to start with a 1/4 or 1/2 of the treat to make sure you don’t intake too much at once. Some edibles take 1-2 hours to kick in fully.

Remix: Use Cheerios, Fruity Pebbles, Cap'n Crunch—the options are endless.

 

II) Natasha's Candied Walnuts

Candied walnuts are ideal for discrete on-the-fly medicating. Bet Natasha—the creator of this version—never thought her highly-rated nuts would get the attention of the cannabis community. Her candied nut recipe looks insanely good, and they'll only deplete you of 1 tbsp. of your precious butter.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup walnut halves/pieces (you can also use this recipe for candied pecans)
  • ¼ cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 Tbsp unsalted butter

Directions:

  • Heat a medium non-stick skillet over medium heat, add 1 cup walnuts, ¼ cup granulated sugar and 1 Tbsp butter.
  • Heat over medium heat for 5 minutes, stirring frequently so your mixture doesn't burn (especially towards the end). When the sugar mixture starts melting, stir constantly until all sugar is melted and nuts are coated.
  • Transfer immediately onto a sheet of parchment paper and separate the nuts right away. Using two spatulas will make this task go faster. You don't want to give the nuts a chance to turn into a wad of inseparable delicious goodness, unless you are the only person who will be enjoying the wad ;). Seriously, move quickly from the time the nuts are coated until they are separated out on the parchment paper.
  • Once the coating hardens (5-7 minutes), you can transfer them to a bowl and enjoy!

 

III) Stovetop Mac and Cheese

Can you medicate Kraft Dinner? Sure. But you're an adult and deserve a better version of macaroni and cheese. This stovetop mac and cheese recipe takes 1/4 cup of butter, and it's genuinely not much harder than making KD.

Ingredients:

  • 16 ounces elbow macaroni
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1⁄4 cup flour
  • 12 teaspoon salt
  • 1 dash black pepper
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese or 8 ounces cheddar cheese

Directions:

  • Cook macaroni according to package directions.
  • In medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat; stir in flour, and cook for 3-5 minutes to form a roux; add salt and pepper; slowly add milk, stirring well after each addition.
  • Cook and stir until bubbly.
  • Stir in cheese, a small amount at a time until fully melted.
  • Drain macaroni; add to cheese sauce; stir to coat.
