Cumberland meets Cannaland

The Institute of economic affairs—a notably conservative think tank—joins a growing chorus of British people calling for the full legalization of cannabis, especially as Uruguay, Canada, and the United States show the many benefits of decriminalization. They describe the current system of prohibition as “failing,” and note that over $3.5 billion pounds are lost to the black market each year.

As Chris Snowdon (head of lifestyle economics at IEA) notes, “done properly, the legalization of cannabis is a win-win-win; criminals lose a lucrative industry, consumers get a better, safer, and cheaper product and the burden on the general taxpayer is reduced."

As is well known, prohibition drives the production of cannabis and cannabis-derived products to an unregulated, underground market, ultimately leading to more potentially dangerous products. Some of the ills stemming from dysregulation include unsuitable levels of mold, mildew, fungus, bacteria, pesticides, and heavy metals, all of which can have their own unique negative effects on health and wellbeing. The costs of enforcement and treatment also put an enormous financial burden on the health and justice systems.

There are an estimated 3 million regular cannabis users among the U.K.’s approximately 66 million inhabitants, or almost 4.5% of the population. Rather than criminalize those individuals, the country could benefit from massive tax revenues and a job boom if cannabis were legalized. Sajid Javid, the Home Secretary of England, has already begun a review of medical marijuana.
