The blazing battle between Facebook and legal cannabis businesses, organizations, and even state-level government agencies continues to rage. For many years, Facebook has been notorious for shutting down cannabis-related pages as well as denying access to advertising and marketing opportunities, even for companies who are just looking to promote education.

In their latest attempt to shut out these cannabis-related entities, Facebook seems to be Shadow Banning almost all organizations and businesses that are in the cannabis space. This all came to light last week when the California Bureau of Cannabis Control discovered that their Facebook page was not showing up in search results on the platform. Other entities that reported the same issue include Marijuana Business Daily and Marijuana Moment, who are both large media outlets in the cannabis space.

While the pages are not being outright removed or banned entirely from search results, you can quickly see with a Facebook search just how relevant this issue is. Just go to Facebook and enter the term “marijuana” or “cannabis” in the search bar. Depending on what pages and groups you’re a part of, there may be minimal results on the main search page. Now click on pages, and you will note that there are absolutely no results found. Pages that Facebook users have already liked and are currently following that contain the search term are also not populating on this tab.

It has often been Facebook’s retort that they ban Facebook pages and deny advertising opportunities to companies in the cannabis space as they are promoting illegal drugs based on the federal government's classification of cannabis. We understand that Facebook must cover their ass and make sure they do not face federal charges for selling federally illegal substances on their platform. But denying an individual's right to information, by preventing them from being able to search for cannabis or marijuana-related Facebook groups and pages, is just wrong.
