Common Contaminants of the Natural and Unnatural Kind
Cannabis very well may be the safest substance known in existence, in its natural state. That doesn't mean, however, that it cannot become contaminated by outside factors. In fact, many different things could infect your stash. Some are natural aspects, while others are an error of human action. In this article, we will look at the natural and unnatural ways in which your weed could accidentally become not so safe.
Bacteria-bacteria-bacteria. Whether you are a human or a plant, bacteria could be both beneficial and deadly. Unhealthy and unwanted microbial contaminants have been found in cannabis on multiple occasions. The most common microbial contaminants found in cannabis are e-coli, streptococcus, and Klebsiella pneumonia, the latter of which can lead to urinary tract infections, meningitis, wound infections, and pneumonia.
The fungus is among us. This is something you never want to hear from a lab that just tested cannabis. A study from clinical microbiology and infection found multiple different types of fungi present in cannabis sourced from various dispensaries in California. Mold is a standard issue when it comes to cannabis plants, but luckily it often can be easily spotted by eye.
To err is human. This couldn't be more accurate when it comes to cannabis. Three unnatural contaminants that commonly impact the safety of cannabis include residual solvents from extraction techniques, pesticides from cultivation, and physical contamination from handling. This is why in states with a legal cannabis market there are stringent testing requirements and why the cannabis industry is one of the highly regulated Industries.
In areas with compassionate views towards cannabis, consumers and patients can purchase cannabis and cannabis products that have been thoroughly tested for many of the common contaminants that could turn someone's medicine into something not so safe. If you live somewhere that is still holding on to the draconian ways of the past, however, you are still at the mercy of whatever you can find on the streets. This is something that needs to change.
