Hawaii has authorized the first sales of medical marijuana this past Tuesday. The first dispensary to be granted a license to sell was Maui Grown Therapies. Despite marijuana having been legalized for medicinal use back in 2000, there was no legal framework for dispensaries to operate under until 2015. Patients have been allowed to grow their own medicine or were forced to find it on the black market. The first sales made by Maui Grown Therapies represent a milestone for the company, and the state of Hawaii as patients have had to wait for nearly 17 years to legally purchase medical marijuana.
Maui Grown Therapies received approval from the state Department of Health to cultivate and manufacture medical marijuana products back in May of this year. At the time of their certification, the only thing holding them back was the certification of a cannabis testing facility. Several laboratories had applied for licensing but one had been approved, creating a bottleneck in the process.
It wasn’t until late July that the Department of Health certified Steep Hill Labs in O’ahu as the first eligible laboratory for marijuana testing. Maui Grown Therapies had their cannabis analyzed at Steep Hill Labs, and after one last physical inspection by the DOH, they were ready to make history. The company began taking orders online, making pickups by appointment only. The prices reportedly were set at $20 per gram and varying in price for quarter ounces which sold for between $90 and $125. The company stated that walk-in sales should begin next week.
